MCUs fit control-oriented, low-bandwidth, cost-sensitive applications. ASICs fit stable algorithms, very high volume, and projects that can absorb non-recurring engineering cost. FPGAs sit between these options and are well suited to high-speed parallel processing, protocol bridging, deterministic latency, and evolving algorithms. Altera's official portfolio includes FPGAs, SoCs, CPLDs, development software, IP, and kits, showing that FPGA adoption involves both silicon and ecosystem. Evaluation should include throughput, I/O, power, BOM, development time, and HDL capability. When requirements change frequently, reconfigurability may be more valuable than lowest unit cost.
